What is ROAS?

Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) measures how much revenue you generate for each dollar of advertising spend. It is a primary paid-media efficiency metric — complementary to ROI, which subtracts cost first.

Why is ROAS Important?

  • Budget allocation

Shows which campaigns deserve more spend.

  • Creative & audience tests

A clear efficiency readout for experiments.

  • Target setting

Pairs with contribution margin to set break-even floors.

  • Stakeholder reporting

    Communicates paid performance simply.

  • Scale decisions

Rising spend with falling ROAS is a warning.

How is ROAS Calculated?

Formula

ROAS = Ad revenue ÷ Ad spend · ROI = (Revenue − Spend) ÷ Spend × 100

Divide revenue attributed to ads by ad spend. ROI uses (revenue − spend) ÷ spend. Be explicit about attribution windows and revenue definitions.

Factors Affecting ROAS

  1. 01

    Attribution model

Last-click vs data-driven changes reported ROAS.

  2. 02

    Offer & landing page

Weak conversion caps return even with cheap clicks.

  3. 03

    Audience quality

Broad targeting can inflate spend without revenue.

  4. 04

    Creative fatigue

Decaying ads reduce efficiency over time.

  5. 05

    Seasonality

Demand swings move ROAS independent of media quality.

  6. 06

    Margin structure

High ROAS can still lose money with thin margins.

ROAS vs. ROI

ROAS

  • Revenue per dollar spent.
  • Common in ad platforms.
  • Does not subtract spend in the primary ratio.

ROI

  • Profit relative to spend.
  • Common in finance discussions.
  • Accounts for cost in the numerator logic.

What is a ROAS Calculator?

A ROAS calculator converts attributed revenue and ad spend into ROAS and ROI so media teams can evaluate campaign efficiency.

Benefits of Using a ROAS Calculator

  • Live efficiency

See ROAS and ROI as inputs change.

  • Campaign comparison

    Standardize math across platforms.

  • Target checks

    Compare results to break-even ROAS.

  • Faster reporting

Skip spreadsheet setup for a first pass.

  • Decision support

Pause, scale, or fix campaigns with clearer evidence.

How to Use a ROAS Calculator

  1. Step 1

    Enter revenue

Use revenue attributed to the campaign or channel.

  2. Step 2

    Enter spend

Use media cost for the same window.

  3. Step 3

    Read ROAS

    Interpret the multiple (e.g. 3.5×).

  4. Step 4

    Check ROI

    Review profit percentage alongside ROAS.

What Is a Good ROAS?

A good ROAS depends on contribution margin. A 3× ROAS may be excellent for high-margin software and unprofitable for low-margin retail. Set targets from break-even ROAS, then add overhead and profit requirements.
